In 1970, organist and conductor Hulmuth Rilling, who is recognized as one of the most important interpreters of Bach and a leading teacher of conducting, was invited to the University of Oregon to teach a series of master classes and conduct two concerts. From this modest beginning evolved the Oregon Bach Festival. Concerts have been at the forefront of the Festival for its general audience, but the behind-the-scenes master classes provided the foundation for these musical offerings. This first volume of Rilling lectures concerns Bach cantatas performed at the Festival in1979-1981. Each lecture includes the musical examples he used to guide the audience through the historical, textual, and musical background of the work. We hope these lectures will provide a framework to better understand the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach, whether one is teaching, performing, studying, or simply listening to these remarkable choral works.
