Arban's Opera Arias for Trumpet & Orchestra by Bob Zottola. For trumpet solo. Studies. Educational. Book & play-along CD. Published by Music Minus One. MO.MMOCD6849. This album can aptly be considered a labor of love for fifteen of these arias are derived from the Art of Phrasing section of the Arban Book, which is considered the "bible" for most trumpet and cornet students as it was for me studying the trumpet with my father. It was published in 1864 by Jean-Baptiste Arban the foremost cornet soloist and teacher of that time and has never been out of print since. My father, who played the violin, trumpet and conducted his own concert band was well-schooled in the European tradition having studied with a professor from the La Scala Milan. Although he modified his teaching methods with me to include jazz and the great standards of what was then known as Tin Pan Alley, the Arban book provided the foundation and my weekly lessons with him always included a song from the 150 in the Art of Phrasing. As soon as my ability reached a level that could handle the operatic arias contained in that section, he assigned them weekly. The arias in this volume were certainly a fondly remembered part of my lessons and a welcome contrast or even "reward" from the more mechanical and technical daily exercises. Although he had a great collection of jazz and big band records, his love of classical and operatic music was always evident in our house especially at dinner time with the records playing Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Ravel and even Stravinsky's Fire Bird Suite. I can still hear the interruption of the phrase before the record changer activated. Dad certainly had a unique concept for dinner music. La Donna e Mobile. Una Furtiva Lagrima. Di tanti palpiti. Merce, Dilette Amici. Quanto E Bella. Sempre Libera. Voila Donc Le Triste. Oh. Come da Quel di Tutto. Vien Leonora. Mentre Contemplo Quel Volto Amato. O Quante Lacrime Timor. Dell'iniqua, Del Protervo. Or Tutti Sorgete Ministri Infrenali. Raggio d'Amor Parea. Come, Innocente Giovane. Meco Tu Vieni. Di Tale Amor che Dirsi. Quando le Sere al Placio. Limbiano Ne'lieti Calici.
